Waxworms

from $9.00

Waxworms, or Galleria mellonella, are soft-bodied, high-fat larvae that serve as excellent treat feeders and appetite stimulants rather than a staple diet component. Their irresistible taste and high caloric content make them perfect for encouraging picky eaters, helping underweight animals gain mass, or providing extra energy to gravid females and animals recovering from illness.

We particularly recommend waxworms for leopard geckos, bearded dragons, and crested geckos as an occasional treat to add dietary variety and encourage feeding in reluctant eaters. However, they should be fed sparingly due to their high fat content to prevent obesity and nutritional imbalances. They're also helpful for larger tarantulas and other invertebrates as a high-energy supplement, particularly during pre-molt periods when extra nutrition supports successful molting, or post-molt to add the weight back on.

What's the ideal gutloading diet for Waxworms?

This particular species is odd and feeds primarily on a mix of wheat bran, cornmeal, honey, and glycerine. It is often preferred to feed them off quickly or offer the moths to your animal as they are sold, nearing their pupal form, as is. No gutloading is necessary or additional nutrition, but we do recommend putting it in cooler temperatures to slow down pupation.

How can I breed and keep Waxworms?

For this feeder, we highly recommend keeping this species on the substrate they come with (Bran or you can utilize regular store bought oats and utilize our Fossorial Fissure Medium enclosures to store upwards of two thousand of them. For Black Soldier Fly larvae, if you continue to feed them, they will take quite some time to become their adult fly form. For Waxworms, you have an extremely limited amount of time to feed them off before they become their moth adult form. Breeding them is extremely difficult, and is not ideal by any means without a significant amount of time, and space.
