Red Runner Roaches

from $4.00

Red runner roaches or Shelfordella lateralis are small, fast-moving feeders that are slightly smaller than dubia’s and have a softer body with less chitin, making them easier to digest for smaller or younger animals. Their high activity level triggers strong feeding responses, and they're an excellent source of protein without the noise, smell, or climbing ability of crickets.

We particularly recommend red runners for juvenile bearded dragons, young monitor lizards, and smaller arboreal species like crested and gargoyle geckos, as their smaller size and erratic movement patterns are perfect for triggering hunting behavior and encouraging reluctant feeders to eat. They're also ideal for tarantula slings and smaller invertebrates due to their appropriately sized prey profile and softer bodies, which reduce impaction risk during critical growth stages.

What's the ideal gutloading diet for Red Runner Roaches?

We highly recommend feeding this species a balanced diet of vegetables & proteins. Additionally, we suggest adding cuttlebone or crushed eggshells to the enclosure to boost calcium intake. For vegetables, we recommend bok choy, mustard greens, and collard greens, as well as organic butternut squash or any other squash that is readily available. Cucumbers can be given for water only; note that they mold easily, and springtails must be added to the enclosure to keep mold spores to a minimum.

How can I breed and keep Red Runner Roaches?

We highly recommend keeping this species on Royal Soil, with Cork Round or Cork Flats, with additional springtails such as Folsomia candida to ensure mold doesn't build up in the container. We recommend a minimum enclosure size of 6 inches cubed for Mealworms, or you can use our Fossorial Fissure Medium enclosures to store upwards of 1,000 of them. For larger Feeders such as Superworms, we recommend a minimum enclosure size of the Terrestrial Terrain Large. For all roach feeders, such as Dubia Roaches or Red Runners, we recommend a 27-gallon tote with air holes drilled.
