Chilobrachys dyscolus 'Black'

from $38.00
Only 5 available

Chilobrachys dyscolus 'Black', commonly known as the Dark Earth Tiger Tarantula, is a bold, fossorial Old World tarantula native to Vietnam and parts of Southeast Asia, where it inhabits tropical lowland forests and dense leaf-littered ground zones. A striking variant of the Chilobrachys dyscolus species, the 'Black' form is renowned for its deep jet-black or dark gunmetal coloration, sometimes highlighted by bluish or purple iridescence that shimmers after a fresh molt.

Like others in the Chilobrachys genus, this species is a heavy webber and obligate burrower, known for creating dense, tunnel-like silk retreats that stretch across and into the substrate. Despite being fossorial, it exhibits arboreal-like webbing behavior, often reinforcing the walls of its enclosure with intricate layers of web. Its intense defensiveness, rapid movement, and potent venom make it unsuitable for handling and best kept by advanced hobbyists.

The Dark Earth Tiger is a nocturnal ambush predator, emerging from its silk tunnels to strike prey with explosive speed. It is highly reactive to disturbance, often giving threat postures and retreating instantly if exposed. While not aggressive without cause, its reactivity and speed demand a careful, hands-off approach.

What's the ideal diet for a Dark Earth Tiger Tarantula?

All Tarantulas can eat a variety of feeders. Stick to crickets, dubia roaches, silkworms, horned worms occasionally, and a superworm or mealworm as the occasional treat!

How should I keep a Dark Earth Tiger Tarantula?

You can start with the Fossorial Fissure Small enclosure for this particular creature. When they are about ⅓ the size, you will want to go to the Fossorial Fissure Medium or Fossorial Fissure Large enclosure. Feed them as slings once a week, twice if their opisthosoma (abdomen) looks small, but if the opisthosoma is wider than their prosoma (pneumothorax), then wait a couple of days to feed. For juveniles or adults, stick to feeding once a week, nothing larger than their opisthosoma. Make sure to keep a full water dish at all times; wider and deeper is preferred.

How long could a Dark Earth Tiger Tarantula live?

Females are believed to live upwards of 15+ years, and males not exceeding around 4 years of age. All estimates are based on multiple sources.
